We’ve been sketching and designing ideas for a new gooseneck every since we bought Uma. You see, the original one, well how do I put this, sucked!! The metal was thin and becoming brittle after almost 50 yrs of service, the bolt holes were elongating and the track on the mast was superfluous and poorly connected to the mast itself. Rebuilding it has been on our list for quite awhile, but we never found the right machine shop to do the work.
However, on our sail up from the Bahamas to Norfolk, the track on the mast ripped out, so it was finally time to take some much needed action.
Below you’ll find our design drawing and some photos of the final build.
